The earliest that you can plant flax in Zone 1a is May. However, you really should wait until June if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant flax and expect a good harvest is probably July. Any later than that and your flax may not have a chance to fully mature. Starting your flax indoors is a great way to get them started a couple of weeks earlier.

In Zone 1a the average date of last frost happens on June 15. It might get as low as -60°F during the coldest months of winter.

Keep in mind that the actual date of last frost is just an average because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 1a and it changes from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 1a you get a frost after June 15 so be sure to be ready to cover your flax if you have one of those late frosts.
