One of the best tools that you have as gardeners to help us figure out your gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for your area.

Since flowering kale are one of those plants that can tolerate a little bit of cold weather you can plant them a bit earlier in the year than more sensitive plants.

The earliest that you can plant flowering kale in Zone 1a is May. However, you really should wait until June if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant flowering kale and expect a good harvest is probably July. If you wait any later than that and your flowering kale may not have a chance to grow to maturity. If you are starting your flowering kale indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a little bit earlier.

Last Frost Date

On average the last frost is on June 15 in Zone 1a. It might get as low as -60°F during the coldest months of winter.

Since the USDA zone info for Zone 1a may not be accurate from year to year the actual date of last frost will vary from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 1a last frost occurs after June 15 so be sure to be ready to protect your flowering kale in the event of one of those late frosts.

This means that on a really cold year, the coldest it will get is -60°F. On most years you should be prepared to experience lows near -55°F.
