You can plant artichokes a bit earlier in the year because they are moderately cold tolerant.

The earliest that you can plant artichokes in Zone 9b is January. However, you really should wait until February if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant artichokes and expect a good harvest is probably October. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your artichokes may not have a chance to grow to maturity. If you are starting your artichokes indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a little bit earlier.

Last Frost Date

The average date of last frost is February 15 in Zone 9b. In the coldest months of winter you can expect an average low temperature of 25°F.

Since the USDA zone info for Zone 9b may not be accurate from year to year the actual date of last frost can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 9b you get surprised by a frost after February 15 so just be sure to be ready to protect your artichokes if you have one of those late frosts.
