When can I plant Squash in Zone 6b

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us estimate our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

The earliest that you can plant squash in Zone 6b is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant squash and expect a good harvest is probably August. If you wait any later than that and your squash may not have a chance to grow to maturity. If you are starting your squash indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a little bit earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 6b the average date of last frost happens on April 15. It might get as low as -5°F during the coldest months of winter.

Remember that our actual date of last frost is not always accurate because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 6b and it can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 6b last frost occurs after April 15 so make sure that you are prepared to protect your squash in the event of one of those late frosts.
