When can I plant Lettuce in Zone 1b

One of the first steps we take when we are determining our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

The USDA zone info for Zone 1b should be looked at to estimate when you can plant lettuce.

Lettuce do well in moderate cold which means that you can start planting them earlier than other plants that might not handle the cold.

The earliest that you can plant lettuce in Zone 1b is May. However, you really should wait until June if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant lettuce and expect a good harvest is probably July. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your lettuce may not have a chance to grow to maturity. If you are starting your lettuce indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a few weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

The average date of last frost is June 15 in Zone 1b. We should expect an average low temperature of -55°F in the coldest months of winter.

It's important to remember that USDA zone info for Zone 1b is just an average and our actual date of last frost can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 1b we get surprised by a frost after June 15 so make sure that you are ready to protect your lettuce if we have a late frost.
