When can I plant Asparagus in Zone 3b

One of the first steps we take when we are determining our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

The earliest that you can plant asparagus in Zone 3b is March. However, you really should wait until April if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant asparagus and expect a good harvest is probably August. If you wait any later than that and your asparagus may not have a chance to really do well. If you are starting your asparagus indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a few weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

The average date of last frost is May 15 in Zone 3b. We should expect an average low temperature of -35°F in the coldest months of winter.

Remember that USDA zone info for Zone 3b may not be accurate from year to year and our actual date of last frost is different every year. Half of the time in Zone 3b it frosts late in the year after May 15 so make sure that you are ready to cover your asparagus if we have a late frost.
