When can I plant Melons in Zone 3b

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us determine our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

A common way of making a decision about when you can plant melons is to examine the USDA zone info for Zone 3b.

Melons are not cold tolerant which means that you must wait until it warms up after the last frost has passed before you can plant them.

The earliest that you can plant melons in Zone 3b is May. However, you really should wait until June if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant melons and expect a good harvest is probably August. If you wait any later than that and your melons may not have a chance to fully mature. If you are starting your melons indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a few weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

On average all chance of frost has passed is on May 15 in Zone 3b. In the coldest months of winter we can expect an average low temperature of -35°F.

Remember that our actual date of last frost may not be accurate from year to year because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 3b and it is different every year. Since half of the time in Zone 3b it frosts late in the year after May 15 be ready to cover your melons in the event of one of those late frosts.
