When can I plant Rhubarb in Zone 3b

One of the first steps we take when we are figuring out our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

A way of determining when it's a good idea to plant rhubarb is to refer to the USDA zone info for Zone 3b.

Rhubarb can survive in some cold which means that you can plant them a bit earlier in the year than plants that are more sensitive to the cold.

The earliest that you can plant rhubarb in Zone 3b is March. However, you really should wait until April if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant rhubarb and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your rhubarb may not have a chance to fully mature. If you are starting your rhubarb indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a few weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

On average all chance of frost has passed is on May 15 in Zone 3b. It might get as low as -35°F during the coldest months of winter.

Always keep in mind that USDA zone info for Zone 3b is not always accurate and our actual date of last frost changes from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 3b there is a last frost after May 15 so make sure that you are ready to protect your rhubarb in the event of one of those late frosts.
