Since aubrieta are one of those plants that can tolerate a little bit of cold weather you can plant them a bit earlier in the year than plants that are more sensitive to the cold.

The last month that you can plant aubrieta and expect a good harvest is probably October. If you wait any later than that and your aubrieta may not have a chance to really do well. If you are starting your aubrieta indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a couple of weeks earlier.

In Zone 10a the average date of last frost happens on January 31. You can expect an average low temperature of 30°F in the coldest months of winter.

Keep in mind that the actual date of last frost is just an average because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 10a and it can change quite a bit from year to year. Since half of the time in Zone 10a last frost occurs after January 31 be ready to protect your aubrieta if you have one of those late frosts.

This means that on a really cold year, the coldest it will get is 30°F. On most years you should be prepared to experience lows near 35°F.
