When can I plant Corn in Zone 10a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us estimate our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

The first opportunity to plant corn in Zone 10a should be estimated by checking out the USDA zone info.

When you should plant them: After all chance of frost has passed.

Since corn are not cold tolerant you must wait until after all chance of frost has passed before you can plant them.

The earliest that you can plant corn in Zone 10a is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant corn and expect a good harvest is probably September. Any later than that and your corn may not have a chance to fully mature. Starting your corn indoors is a great way to get them started a few weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

The average date of last frost is January 31 in Zone 10a. In the coldest months of winter we can expect an average low temperature of 30°F.

Remember that our actual date of last frost may not be accurate from year to year because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 10a and it will vary from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 10a it frosts late in the year after January 31 so just be sure to be ready to cover your corn if we have one of those late frosts.
