You should not plant tagetes until after the last frost because they are not cold tolerant.

The earliest that you can plant tagetes in Zone 10a is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant tagetes and expect a good harvest is probably September. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your tagetes may not have a chance to really do well. If you are starting your tagetes indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a couple of weeks earlier.

On average the last frost when the weather gets warmer is on January 31 in Zone 10a. In the coldest months of winter you should expect an average low temperature of 30°F.

Keep in mind that the actual date of last frost is not always accurate because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 10a and it can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 10a last frost occurs after January 31 so always be ready to cover your tagetes if you have a late frost.

This means that on a really cold year, the coldest it will get is 30°F. On most years you should be prepared to experience lows near 35°F.
