When can I plant Hosta in Zone 7b

One of the first steps we take when we are estimating our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

Since hosta are moderately cold tolerant you can plant them just a bit earlier in the year than more sensitive plants.

The earliest that you can plant hosta in Zone 7b is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant hosta and expect a good harvest is probably September. If you wait any later than that and your hosta may not have a chance to fully mature. If you are starting your hosta indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a few weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

The average date of last frost is April 15 in Zone 7b. In the coldest months of winter we can expect an average low temperature of 5°F.

Just be sure to remember that USDA zone info for Zone 7b is an average and our actual date of last frost changes from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 7b last frost occurs after April 15 so make sure that you are prepared to cover your hosta in the event of one of those late frosts.
