When can I plant Spearmint in Zone 7b

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us determine our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

The earliest that you can plant spearmint in Zone 7b is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant spearmint and expect a good harvest is probably September. If you wait any later than that and your spearmint may not have a chance to grow to maturity. If you are starting your spearmint indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a few weeks earlier.

In Zone 7b the average date of last frost happens on April 15. In the coldest months of winter we should expect an average low temperature of 5°F.

Remember that our actual date of last frost may not be accurate from year to year because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 7b and it can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 7b it frosts late in the year after April 15 so be sure to be ready to cover your spearmint in the event of a late frost.
