When can I plant Violas in Zone 7b

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us determine our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

Violas tend to make it in cold weather which tells us that you can plant them much earlier in the year than plants that are more sensitive to the cold.

The earliest that you can plant violas in Zone 7b is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant violas and expect a good harvest is probably September. If you wait any later than that and your violas may not have a chance to grow to maturity. If you are starting your violas indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a couple of weeks earlier.

In Zone 7b the average date of last frost happens on April 15. In the coldest months of winter we can expect an average low temperature of 5°F.

It's important to remember that USDA zone info for Zone 7b is not always accurate and our actual date of last frost can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 7b we get a frost after April 15 so always be ready to protect your violas if we have a late frost.
