When can I plant Onions in Zone 13a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us figure out our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

Onions are one of those plants that can tolerate quite a bit of cold weather which tells us that you can get them planted much earlier than plants that are more sensitive to the cold.

The earliest that you can plant onions in Zone 13a is January. However, you really should wait until February if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant onions and expect a good harvest is probably November. If you wait any later than that and your onions may not have a chance to fully mature. If you are starting your onions indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a little bit earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 13a it never frosts. In the coldest months of winter we should expect an average low temperature of 60°F.

Remember that our actual date of last frost is just an average because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 13a and it is different every year. Since it never frosts in Zone 13a you do not have to be ready to protect your onions in the event of one of those late frosts.
