When can I plant Salsify in Zone 13a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us estimate our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

A common way of getting a good idea when you can plant salsify is to look at the USDA zone info for Zone 13a.

Salsify are one of those plants that can tolerate a tiny bit of cold weather which means that you can start planting them slightly earlier than more sensitive plants.

The earliest that you can plant salsify in Zone 13a is January. However, you really should wait until February if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant salsify and expect a good harvest is probably November. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your salsify may not have a chance to grow to maturity. Starting your salsify indoors is a great way to get them started a little bit earlier.

In Zone 13a it never frosts. In the coldest months of winter we can expect an average low temperature of 60°F.

Just be sure to remember that our actual date of last frost is an average because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 13a and it is different every year. Since it never frosts in Zone 13a you do not have to be ready to cover your salsify in the event of a surprise late frost.
