When can I plant Scallions in Zone 13a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us figure out our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

When you should plant them: Up to 3 weeks before last frost.

Since scallions are barely cold tolerant you can plant them a bit earlier in the year than other plants that might not handle the cold.

The earliest that you can plant scallions in Zone 13a is January. However, you really should wait until February if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant scallions and expect a good harvest is probably November. If you wait any later than that and your scallions may not have a chance to fully mature. Starting your scallions indoors is a great way to get them started a couple of weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 13a it never frosts. In the coldest months of winter we should expect an average low temperature of 60°F.

It's important to remember that our actual date of last frost is just an average because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 13a and it can change quite a bit from year to year. Since it never frosts in Zone 13a you do not have to be ready to protect your scallions if we have a late frost.
