When can I plant Chervil in Zone 5a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us estimate our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

When you should plant them: Up to 3 weeks before last frost.

Chervil do well in mild cold which tells us that you can plant them just a tiny bit earlier in the year than other plants that might not handle the cold.

The earliest that you can plant chervil in Zone 5a is March. However, you really should wait until April if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant chervil and expect a good harvest is probably August. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your chervil may not have a chance to grow to maturity. You can get started a little bit earlier by starting your chervil indoors.

The average date of last frost is April 15 in Zone 5a. In the coldest months of winter we can expect an average low temperature of -20°F.

Keep in mind that our actual date of last frost is just an average because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 5a and it is different every year. Half of the time in Zone 5a it frosts late in the year after April 15 so make sure that you are prepared to protect your chervil if we have a late frost.
