The earliest that you can plant strawberries in Zone 5a is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant strawberries and expect a good harvest is probably September. Any later than that and your strawberries may not have a chance to really do well. You can get started a little bit earlier by starting your strawberries indoors.

In Zone 5a the average date of last frost happens on April 15. We should expect an average low temperature of -20°F in the coldest months of winter.

Keep in mind that our actual date of last frost may not be accurate from year to year because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 5a and it changes from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 5a we get a frost after April 15 so just be sure to be ready to protect your strawberries if we have one of those late frosts.
