When can I plant Snapdragons in Zone 5a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us determine our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

The earliest that you can plant snapdragons in Zone 5a is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant snapdragons and expect a good harvest is probably September. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your snapdragons may not have a chance to really do well. If you are starting your snapdragons indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a little bit earlier.

In Zone 5a the average date of last frost happens on April 15. It might get as low as -20°F during the coldest months of winter.

Always keep in mind that our actual date of last frost is just an average because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 5a and it can change quite a bit from year to year. Since half of the time in Zone 5a there is a last frost after April 15 be ready to protect your snapdragons in the event of one of those late frosts.
