Garlic are one of those plants that can tolerate quite a bit of cold weather which tells us that you can start planting them much earlier than more sensitive plants.

The earliest that you can plant garlic in Zone 8a is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant garlic and expect a good harvest is probably September. Any later than that and your garlic may not have a chance to grow to maturity. If you are starting your garlic indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a little bit earlier.

The average date of last frost is March 15 in Zone 8a. It might get as low as 10°F during the coldest months of winter.

Since the USDA zone info for Zone 8a is not always accurate the actual date of last frost will vary from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 8a it frosts late in the year after March 15 so just be sure to be ready to cover your garlic in the event of a surprise late frost.
