When can I plant Melons in Zone 8a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us determine our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

The earliest that you can plant melons in Zone 8a is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant melons and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your melons may not have a chance to really do well. If you are starting your melons indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a few weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 8a the average date of last frost happens on March 15. We can expect an average low temperature of 10°F in the coldest months of winter.

Just be sure to remember that our actual date of last frost is just an average because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 8a and it is different every year. Since half of the time in Zone 8a it frosts late in the year after March 15 be ready to cover your melons if we have one of those late frosts.
