When can I plant Lettuce in Zone 8a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us estimate our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

A common way of figuring out when it's the best time to plant lettuce is to examine the USDA zone info for Zone 8a.

Lettuce are one of those plants that can tolerate a little bit of cold weather which means that you can start planting them earlier than more sensitive plants.

The earliest that you can plant lettuce in Zone 8a is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant lettuce and expect a good harvest is probably September. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your lettuce may not have a chance to really do well. You can get started a little bit earlier by starting your lettuce indoors.

In Zone 8a the average date of last frost happens on March 15. In the coldest months of winter we should expect an average low temperature of 10°F.

Always keep in mind that USDA zone info for Zone 8a is just an average and our actual date of last frost can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 8a last frost occurs after March 15 so make sure that you are prepared to cover your lettuce if we have one of those late frosts.
