When can I plant Anise in Zone 4b

Since anise are one of those plants that can tolerate a tiny bit of cold weather you can plant them slightly earlier in the year than other plants that might not handle the cold.

The earliest that you can plant anise in Zone 4b is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant anise and expect a good harvest is probably August. If you wait any later than that and your anise may not have a chance to grow to maturity. If you are starting your anise indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a few weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 4b the average date of last frost happens on May 15. It might get as low as -25°F during the coldest months of winter.

Remember that USDA zone info for Zone 4b is not always accurate and our actual date of last frost will vary from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 4b it frosts late in the year after May 15 so be sure to be ready to protect your anise if we have a late frost.
