When can I plant Purslane in Zone 4b

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us estimate our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

The first opportunity to plant purslane in Zone 4b should be determined by using the USDA zone info.

You can plant purslane a bit earlier in the year because they do ok in moderate cold.

The earliest that you can plant purslane in Zone 4b is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant purslane and expect a good harvest is probably August. If you wait any later than that and your purslane may not have a chance to grow to maturity. Starting your purslane indoors is a great way to get them started a couple of weeks earlier.

In Zone 4b the average date of last frost happens on May 15. We can expect an average low temperature of -25°F in the coldest months of winter.

Keep in mind that our actual date of last frost is an average because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 4b and it can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 4b it frosts late in the year after May 15 so always be ready to protect your purslane in the event of a surprise late frost.
