When can I plant Lovage in Zone 4b

One of the first steps we take when we are determining our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

The USDA zone info for Zone 4b should be used to determine when it's a good idea to plant lovage.

Frost tolerance for lovage: Tolerant of a very small amount of frost.
When you should plant them: Up to 3 weeks before last frost.

Lovage are one of those plants that can tolerate a tiny bit of cold weather which means that you can start planting them slightly earlier than plants that are more sensitive to the cold.

The earliest that you can plant lovage in Zone 4b is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant lovage and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your lovage may not have a chance to grow to maturity. If you are starting your lovage indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a little bit earlier.

Last Frost Date

On average all chance of frost has passed is on May 15 in Zone 4b. In the coldest months of winter we should expect an average low temperature of -25°F.

Remember that our actual date of last frost is not always accurate because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 4b and it will vary from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 4b last frost occurs after May 15 so just be sure to be ready to protect your lovage in the event of one of those late frosts.
