When can I plant Scallions in Zone 4b

One of the first steps we take when we are figuring out our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

By referring to the USDA zone info for Zone 4b you will be able to estimate when you can plant scallions.

Frost tolerance for scallions: Tolerant of a very small amount of frost.
When you should plant them: Up to 3 weeks before last frost.

Since scallions are barely cold tolerant you can plant them just a tiny bit earlier in the year than other plants that might not handle the cold.

The earliest that you can plant scallions in Zone 4b is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant scallions and expect a good harvest is probably August. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your scallions may not have a chance to fully mature. Starting your scallions indoors is a great way to get them started a few weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

On average the last frost has passed is on May 15 in Zone 4b. In the coldest months of winter we should expect an average low temperature of -25°F.

Always keep in mind that our actual date of last frost may not be accurate from year to year because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 4b and it will vary from year to year. Since half of the time in Zone 4b it frosts late in the year after May 15 be ready to protect your scallions in the event of a late frost.
