When can I plant Cabbage in Zone 5b

One of the first steps we take when we are figuring out our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

The earliest that you can plant cabbage in Zone 5b is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant cabbage and expect a good harvest is probably September. If you wait any later than that and your cabbage may not have a chance to grow to maturity. If you are starting your cabbage indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a few weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

The average date of last frost is April 15 in Zone 5b. It might get as low as -15°F during the coldest months of winter.

Since the USDA zone info for Zone 5b is just an average our actual date of last frost will vary from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 5b we get surprised by a frost after April 15 so just be sure to be ready to cover your cabbage if we have one of those late frosts.
