When can I plant Purslane in Zone 5b

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us determine our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

In Zone 5b you can figure out when to plant purslane by looking at the USDA zone info.

When you should plant them: Up to 3 weeks before last frost.

You can plant purslane a bit earlier in the year because they are one of those plants that can tolerate a tiny bit of cold weather.

The earliest that you can plant purslane in Zone 5b is March. However, you really should wait until April if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant purslane and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your purslane may not have a chance to grow to maturity. Starting your purslane indoors is a great way to get them started a few weeks earlier.

On average all chance of frost has passed is on April 15 in Zone 5b. In the coldest months of winter we can expect an average low temperature of -15°F.

Keep in mind that our actual date of last frost may not be accurate from year to year because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 5b and it is different every year. Since half of the time in Zone 5b it frosts late in the year after April 15 be ready to cover your purslane in the event of a late frost.
