You can plant kale a little bit earlier in the year because they do well in moderate cold.

The earliest that you can plant kale in Zone 5b is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant kale and expect a good harvest is probably September. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your kale may not have a chance to really do well. If you are starting your kale indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a few weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

On average the last frost is on April 15 in Zone 5b. You can expect an average low temperature of -15°F in the coldest months of winter.

Since the USDA zone info for Zone 5b is just an average the actual date of last frost changes from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 5b you get surprised by a frost after April 15 so be sure to be ready to protect your kale in the event of a surprise late frost.
