When can I plant Echinacea in Zone 9a

Since echinacea are one of those plants that can tolerate a tiny bit of cold weather you can plant them slightly earlier in the year than more sensitive plants.

The earliest that you can plant echinacea in Zone 9a is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant echinacea and expect a good harvest is probably September. If you wait any later than that and your echinacea may not have a chance to fully mature. If you are starting your echinacea indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a little bit earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 9a the average date of last frost happens on February 15. In the coldest months of winter we can expect an average low temperature of 20°F.

Keep in mind that USDA zone info for Zone 9a is not always accurate and our actual date of last frost can change quite a bit from year to year. Since half of the time in Zone 9a it frosts late in the year after February 15 be ready to protect your echinacea in the event of a late frost.
