You can plant lettuce a bit earlier in the year because they are moderately cold tolerant.

The earliest that you can plant lettuce in Zone 9a is January. However, you really should wait until February if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant lettuce and expect a good harvest is probably October. Any later than that and your lettuce may not have a chance to grow to maturity. If you are starting your lettuce indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a little bit earlier.

In Zone 9a the average date of last frost happens on February 15. In the coldest months of winter you should expect an average low temperature of 20°F.

Just be sure to remember that USDA zone info for Zone 9a may not be accurate from year to year and the actual date of last frost can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 9a there is a last frost after February 15 so be sure to be ready to protect your lettuce in the event of a late frost.

This means that on a really cold year, the coldest it will get is 20°F. On most years you should be prepared to experience lows near 25°F.
