The earliest that you can plant endive in Zone 9a is January. However, you really should wait until February if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant endive and expect a good harvest is probably October. If you wait any later than that and your endive may not have a chance to really do well. Starting your endive indoors is a great way to get them started a few weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 9a the average date of last frost happens on February 15. It might get as low as 20°F during the coldest months of winter.

Just be sure to remember that the actual date of last frost is an average because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 9a and it is different every year. Half of the time in Zone 9a there is a last frost after February 15 so be sure to be ready to cover your endive if you have a late frost.
