When can I plant Stocks in Zone 9a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us estimate our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

You should be able to figure out when you can plant stocks by reviewing the USDA zone info for Zone 9a.


Planting Calendar for Stocks

Frost tolerance for stocks: Tolerant of a very small amount of frost.
When you should plant them: Up to 3 weeks before last frost.

You can plant stocks just a tiny bit earlier in the year because they do ok in moderate cold.

The earliest that you can plant stocks in Zone 9a is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant stocks and expect a good harvest is probably September. Any later than that and your stocks may not have a chance to fully mature. If you are starting your stocks indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a few weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

The average date of last frost is February 15 in Zone 9a. We should expect an average low temperature of 20°F in the coldest months of winter.

Just be sure to remember that our actual date of last frost is just an average because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 9a and it can change quite a bit from year to year. Since half of the time in Zone 9a it frosts late in the year after February 15 be ready to cover your stocks in the event of a surprise late frost.

This means that on a really cold year, the coldest it will get is 20°F. On most years you should be prepared to experience lows near 25°F.
