When to Plant Scallions in Zone 1a

One of the best tools that you have as gardeners to help us figure out your gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for your area.

A common way of making a decision about when it's the best time to plant scallions is to use the USDA zone info for Zone 1a.

When to plant: Up to 3 weeks before last frost.

You can plant scallions a bit earlier in the year because they are one of those plants that can tolerate a tiny bit of cold weather.

The earliest that you can plant scallions in Zone 1a is June. However, you really should wait until July if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant scallions and expect a good harvest is probably July. Any later than that and your scallions may not have a chance to grow to maturity. If you are starting your scallions indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a couple of weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

On average the last frost when the weather gets warmer is on June 15 in Zone 1a. You can expect an average low temperature of -60°F in the coldest months of winter.

Remember that USDA zone info for Zone 1a is not always accurate and the actual date of last frost can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 1a it frosts late in the year after June 15 so make sure that you are ready to cover your scallions in the event of one of those late frosts.

This means that on a really cold year, the coldest it will get is -60°F. On most years you should be prepared to experience lows near -55°F.
