When can I plant Torch Lilys in Zone 1a

One of the first steps we take when we are figuring out our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

You should be able to figure out when you can plant torch lilys by looking at the USDA zone info for Zone 1a.

Frost tolerance for torch lilys: Very tolerant of frost.
When you should plant them: Up to 7 weeks before last frost.

Torch Lilys can survive in quite a bit of cold which means that you can plant them quite a bit earlier in the year than more sensitive plants.

The earliest that you can plant torch lilys in Zone 1a is May. However, you really should wait until June if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant torch lilys and expect a good harvest is probably July. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your torch lilys may not have a chance to grow to maturity. If you are starting your torch lilys indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a couple of weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 1a the average date of last frost happens on June 15. It might get as low as -60°F during the coldest months of winter.

It's important to remember that our actual date of last frost is not always accurate because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 1a and it changes from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 1a we get a frost after June 15 so just be sure to be ready to cover your torch lilys if we have one of those late frosts.

This means that on a really cold year, the coldest it will get is -60°F. On most years you should be prepared to experience lows near -55°F.
