When can I plant Asters in Zone 2b

Asters do ok in moderate cold which means that you can plant them a bit earlier in the year than plants that are more sensitive to the cold.

The earliest that you can plant asters in Zone 2b is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant asters and expect a good harvest is probably August. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your asters may not have a chance to fully mature. If you are starting your asters indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a couple of weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 2b the average date of last frost happens on May 15. In the coldest months of winter we can expect an average low temperature of -45°F.

It's important to remember that our actual date of last frost is just an average because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 2b and it is different every year. Half of the time in Zone 2b we get a frost after May 15 so always be ready to protect your asters in the event of one of those late frosts.
