When to Plant Chicory in Zone 2b

One of the best tools that you have as gardeners to help us figure out your gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for your area.

By referring to the USDA zone info for Zone 2b you should be able to determine when it's possible to plant chicory.

You can plant chicory a little earlier in the year because they are moderately cold tolerant.

The earliest that you can plant chicory in Zone 2b is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant chicory and expect a good harvest is probably August. If you wait any later than that and your chicory may not have a chance to really do well. If you are starting your chicory indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a couple of weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

On average the last frost has passed is on May 15 in Zone 2b. It might get as low as -45°F during the coldest months of winter.

Since the USDA zone info for Zone 2b is just an average the actual date of last frost changes from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 2b you get a frost after May 15 so be sure to be ready to cover your chicory in the event of a late frost.
