The earliest that you can plant liatris in Zone 2b is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant liatris and expect a good harvest is probably August. If you wait any later than that and your liatris may not have a chance to really do well. If you are starting your liatris indoors then you might be able to get away with starting them a couple of weeks earlier.

On average all chance of frost has passed is on May 15 in Zone 2b. You should expect an average low temperature of -45°F in the coldest months of winter.

Keep in mind that the actual date of last frost is not always accurate because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 2b and it changes from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 2b you get a frost after May 15 so just be sure to be ready to cover your liatris if you have one of those late frosts.
