When can I plant Onions in Zone 2b

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us estimate our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

You can determine when to plant onions in Zone 2b by using the USDA zone info.

You can plant onions a lot earlier in the year because they do well in cold.

The earliest that you can plant onions in Zone 2b is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant onions and expect a good harvest is probably August. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your onions may not have a chance to really do well. Starting your onions indoors is a great way to get them started a couple of weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Zone 2b the average date of last frost happens on May 15. It might get as low as -45°F during the coldest months of winter.

It's important to remember that USDA zone info for Zone 2b is not always accurate and our actual date of last frost can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 2b we get a frost after May 15 so just be sure to be ready to protect your onions in the event of a surprise late frost.
