Garlic do well in a bit of cold which means that you can plant them much earlier in the year than other frost tender plants.

The earliest that you can plant garlic in Ontario is January. However, you really should wait until February if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant garlic and expect a good harvest is probably October. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your garlic may not have a chance to grow to maturity. You can get started a couple of weeks earlier by starting your garlic indoors.

Last Frost Date

The average date of last frost is January 31 in Ontario. In the coldest months of winter you should expect an average low temperature of 30°F.

It's important to remember that USDA zone info for Ontario is an average and the actual date of last frost changes from year to year. Half of the time in Ontario last frost occurs after January 31 so just be sure to be ready to cover your garlic in the event of a surprise late frost.

This means that on a really cold year, the coldest it will get is 30°F. On most years you should be prepared to experience lows near 35°F.
