It's probably a bad idea to plant tropical hibiscus until after the last frost has passed because they are not cold tolerant.

The earliest that you can plant tropical hibiscus in Ontario is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant tropical hibiscus and expect a good harvest is probably September. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your tropical hibiscus may not have a chance to fully mature. Starting your tropical hibiscus indoors is a great way to get them started a few weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

In Ontario the average date of last frost happens on January 31. It might get as low as 30°F during the coldest months of winter.

Keep in mind that USDA zone info for Ontario is an average and the actual date of last frost changes from year to year. Since half of the time in Ontario it frosts late in the year after January 31 be ready to cover your tropical hibiscus if you have a surprise late frost.

This means that on a really cold year, the coldest it will get is 30°F. On most years you should be prepared to experience lows near 35°F.
