You really shouldn't plant sweet potato vine until after the last frost when the weather gets warmer because they are not cold tolerant.

The earliest that you can plant sweet potato vine in Ontario is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant sweet potato vine and expect a good harvest is probably September. Any later than that and your sweet potato vine may not have a chance to fully mature. You can get started a couple of weeks earlier by starting your sweet potato vine indoors.

The average date of last frost is January 31 in Ontario. In the coldest months of winter you should expect an average low temperature of 30°F.

Always keep in mind that USDA zone info for Ontario may not be accurate from year to year and the actual date of last frost can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Ontario it frosts late in the year after January 31 so always be ready to protect your sweet potato vine in the event of a surprise late frost.

This means that on a really cold year, the coldest it will get is 30°F. On most years you should be prepared to experience lows near 35°F.
