When can I plant Calendula in Zone 6a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us determine our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

By referring to the USDA zone info for Zone 6a it's possible to determine when it's the best time to plant calendula.

Since calendula are one of those plants that can tolerate a little bit of cold weather you can plant them a little earlier in the year than other frost tender plants.

The earliest that you can plant calendula in Zone 6a is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant calendula and expect a good harvest is probably September. Any later than that and your calendula may not have a chance to grow to maturity. Starting your calendula indoors is a great way to get them started a couple of weeks earlier.

The average date of last frost is April 15 in Zone 6a. It might get as low as -10°F during the coldest months of winter.

Always keep in mind that our actual date of last frost may not be accurate from year to year because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 6a and it can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 6a it frosts late in the year after April 15 so be sure to be ready to protect your calendula if we have a surprise late frost.
