When can I plant Okra in Zone 6a

By checking out the USDA zone info for Zone 6a it's a good idea to estimate when it's possible to plant okra.

Since okra are not cold tolerant it is important to wait until after the last frost before you can plant them.

The earliest that you can plant okra in Zone 6a is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant okra and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your okra may not have a chance to grow to maturity. Starting your okra indoors is a great way to get them started a couple of weeks earlier.

In Zone 6a the average date of last frost happens on April 15. In the coldest months of winter we can expect an average low temperature of -10°F.

Since the USDA zone info for Zone 6a is just an average our actual date of last frost can change quite a bit from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 6a it frosts late in the year after April 15 so just be sure to be ready to cover your okra if we have one of those late frosts.
