When can I plant Strawberries in Zone 6a

Before planting it is a good idea to find our USDA Zone info to determine our garden schedule. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

Since strawberries do well in cold you can plant them much earlier in the year than more sensitive plants.

The earliest that you can plant strawberries in Zone 6a is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant strawberries and expect a good harvest is probably September. If you wait any later than that and your strawberries may not have a chance to really do well. Starting your strawberries indoors is a great way to get them started a little bit earlier.

In Zone 6a the average date of last frost happens on April 15. We should expect an average low temperature of -10°F in the coldest months of winter.

Just be sure to remember that USDA zone info for Zone 6a is just an average and our actual date of last frost changes from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 6a we get a frost after April 15 so make sure that you are prepared to cover your strawberries if we have a late frost.
