When can I plant Squash in Zone 6a

One of the first steps we take when we are determining our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The zone info helps tell us things like average date of last frost and lowest expected temperature for our area.

A way of estimating when it's possible to plant squash is to refer to the USDA zone info for Zone 6a.

It's probably not a good idea to plant squash until after all chance of frost has passed because they require warm weather.

The earliest that you can plant squash in Zone 6a is April. However, you really should wait until May if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant squash and expect a good harvest is probably August. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your squash may not have a chance to grow to maturity. Starting your squash indoors is a great way to get them started a couple of weeks earlier.

Last Frost Date

The average date of last frost is April 15 in Zone 6a. It might get as low as -10°F during the coldest months of winter.

Keep in mind that USDA zone info for Zone 6a is not always accurate and our actual date of last frost is different every year. Half of the time in Zone 6a we get a frost after April 15 so always be ready to protect your squash if we have one of those late frosts.
