When can I plant Lettuce in Zone 6a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us figure out our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

A way of getting a good idea when it's the best time to plant lettuce is to look at the USDA zone info for Zone 6a.

Lettuce are one of those plants that can tolerate a little bit of cold weather which means that you can plant them earlier than other plants that might not handle the cold.

The earliest that you can plant lettuce in Zone 6a is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant lettuce and expect a good harvest is probably September. If you wait any later than that and your lettuce may not have a chance to grow to maturity. Starting your lettuce indoors is a great way to get them started a couple of weeks earlier.

On average the last frost has passed is on April 15 in Zone 6a. In the coldest months of winter we should expect an average low temperature of -10°F.

Just be sure to remember that our actual date of last frost may not be accurate from year to year because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 6a and it can change quite a bit from year to year. Since half of the time in Zone 6a we get a frost after April 15 be ready to protect your lettuce if we have a late frost.
