When can I plant Clover in Zone 6a

One of the best tools that we have as gardeners to help us figure out our gardening schedule is the USDA zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

The USDA zone info for Zone 6a can be read to estimate when it's a good idea to plant clover.

When you should plant them: Up to 3 weeks before last frost.

You can plant clover slightly earlier in the year because they do ok in moderate cold.

The earliest that you can plant clover in Zone 6a is March. However, you really should wait until April if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant clover and expect a good harvest is probably August. Any later than that and your clover may not have a chance to really do well. You can get started a little bit earlier by starting your clover indoors.

Last Frost Date

On average the last frost when the weather gets warmer is on April 15 in Zone 6a. It might get as low as -10°F during the coldest months of winter.

Keep in mind that USDA zone info for Zone 6a is not always accurate and our actual date of last frost changes from year to year. Half of the time in Zone 6a it frosts late in the year after April 15 so make sure that you are prepared to protect your clover in the event of a surprise late frost.
