When can I plant Poppies in Zone 6a

One of the first steps we take when we are figuring out our gardening schedule is find our USDA Zone info. The most important data that the zone info tells us is average last frost and the lowest expected temperature for our area.

The earliest that you can plant poppies in Zone 6a is February. However, you really should wait until March if you don't want to take any chances.

The last month that you can plant poppies and expect a good harvest is probably September. You probably don't want to wait any later than that or else your poppies may not have a chance to really do well. Starting your poppies indoors is a great way to get them started a couple of weeks earlier.

On average the last frost has passed is on April 15 in Zone 6a. In the coldest months of winter we can expect an average low temperature of -10°F.

Always keep in mind that our actual date of last frost may not be accurate from year to year because it is based on the USDA zone info for Zone 6a and it is different every year. Half of the time in Zone 6a we get a frost after April 15 so make sure that you are prepared to protect your poppies in the event of one of those late frosts.
